Since its common for gum disease to occur, especially as we age, many people are referred to a Periodontist if gum disease is detected. A major cause of periodontal disease is the buildup of plaque, which results from the overgrowth of the mouth's naturally occurring bacteria.
Factors of Periodontal Disease
Tobacco Use: - Smokers are more likely to have periodontal disease and it is more likely to progress faster.
Systemic Diseases: - Diabetes and other diseases can lower the body's resistance to infection and inflammation by periodontal bacteria.
Medications: - Several drugs, such as calcium channel blockers, anti-seizure medications, bisphosphonates, and hormones, can affect the gums. Some drugs reduce the flow of saliva and increase the risk of periodontal problems.
Plaque Traps: - Chipped fillings or worn-out bridges can accumulate plaque and make it difficult to brush and floss effectively.
Risks
The presence of uncontrolled periodontal disease can complicate chemo- and radiation- therapy. There are studies which indicate a link between the presence of uncontrolled periodontal disease and low birth weight babies, earlier delivery, and complications of heart disease. Lost teeth can now be replaced, even if you lost the tooth or teeth because of periodontal problems. A dental implant is a titanium post which is placed into the jawbone. The bone fuses to the implant making a secure and comfortable support. Your dentist uses the implants we place as supports for new crowns or over-dentures. Implant treatment can replace a single tooth without the need to cut down your natural teeth on either side of the space. Most people find that implant supported replacement teeth make a more natural feeling replacement than conventional replacements. |
